Education Session: "Innovative Solutions to Affordable Housing" panel with Effie Dennison (Texas Capital Bank), Kathy Denny (Austin Housing Conservancy), Bradyn Boone (Hanover Property Company & Texas Heavenly Homes), and David Danenfelzer (Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation)

Texas has built a reputation as a state where families can live well for less, with several of its metropolitan areas consistently ranked among the nation’s most affordable. The economic success of our cities is changing that picture as the rise in home prices has outpaced the nation as a whole. Texas homebuilders are struggling to meet the strong demand for affordable single-family homes and multifamily housing. This session will highlight innovative solutions and partners addressing housing affordability across the state.

Texas House Bill 3215, that took effect in September 2021, updated the state’s universal energy code compliance pathway to allow builders to use the HERS Index (in addition to 2018 IECC backstops) for energy code compliance across the state, in lieu of the state energy code or any stretch code adopted by municipalities. Join us to learn how can builders take advantage of this new compliance option with a local HERS rating company.

The presentation will include some of the unforeseen and unexpected issues that could occur in either instance, and the importance of reviewing and following the building codes in this regard. The discussion includes: pool and home location; grading and drainage; how a pool affects a home; and taking into consideration both pool installation and homebuilding code compliance.

Education Session: "Creating Homes that Support Today's Lifestyle and Tomorrow's Memories" with Cindy Aplanalp ( Chairma Design Group) and Chris Bolio (Alair Homes)

People want so much more from their homes than in the past. The world has changed in the last few years, and our industry is playing a major role in enhancing the lifestyles of our clients. Working from home and home schooling has dramatically altered the way traditional spaces are used. The need for respite and functional beauty is appreciated now more than ever. A lot of attention and thought is being given to lifestyle and how “space” really enhances our quality of life. Clients are leaning on us to offer fresh ideas on creating homes that fully satisfy and soothe. This presentation will focus on what clients want and how the Design/Build community is meeting those demands. Top of the list for this discussion are: kitchens, "super” pantries, and the hardworking spaces that make life easier like mud rooms and laundry rooms. Outdoor living and sanctuary spaces such as primary suites and spa-like baths are in high-demand. Builders and designers can work together to create spaces that we are proud of and that have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of the clients we serve.

Demo Session: "Completely Curbless!" presented by: Schluter Systems L.P.

Curbless showers allow you to create spa-like retreats, with built-in seats and benches, inset shelves and niches, low-profile linear drains, and heated floors that run from the tile floor right into the shower. And now, they are even easier to achieve.
Join us for our live demonstration where we will be creating an open-concept oasis featuring our new thinner trays, STYLE grates, and KERDI-BOARD waterproof building panels.
Need tips on how to create a waterproof envelope in the bathroom when going curbless? We’ll be covering that too! Because wet areas and dry areas are not clearly defined in curbless showers, the bathroom must be sufficiently protected against water and moisture as a whole. DITRA and DITRA-HEAT offer that protection. Come find out more!
